Making digital materials believable

An art-direction checklist for product images with a consistent material and lighting language.

Illustrative studio imagery

Begin with a material reference

Describe what a surface does with light: polished metal reflects its surroundings, a matte case diffuses them, and glass reveals what is behind it. Use a small set of visual references to keep those behaviors consistent.

Give the object somewhere to exist

Contact shadows, believable scale and a coherent light source make the scene easier to read. Check the object’s edges and its contact with the surface before adding more atmosphere.

Judge the image as product communication

The viewer should understand what is being shown. Compare the render or generated image with the actual product reference, including proportions and details. Keep the result labeled as a concept when the physical product is not established.

Keep exploring.
